The construction methods used for both new houses and extensions are changing very rapidly. There is a move to abandon high Co2 Footprint materials such as brick, cement, concrete and brick and replace them where possible with renewable or recyclable materials such as wood based products and aluminum.
While building societies and insurance companies are reluctant to let go of these legacy materials the outlook for the user and home owner is very positive.
Construction must now seek to achieve well insulated and ventilated buildings requiring minimum heating. This is very easy to achieve and actually as designers we are now more concerned with keeping houses cool than warm.
So why is there a picture of a stone chimney and an open fire?
The stone is to add a visual element of solidity to the building, the fire because the client wanted it.
